Community Picnic in George Street Woods

Sunday 9th of June at 12 noon

I will be running this event and anyone is welcome. Please bring along your own food and drink and something to sit on. Our picnic will be followed by drinks at the Globe.

Let’s not let the weather put us off: if it is raining, we will meet at the Globe instead.

The woods are situated and accessed from the back of the Central Methodist Church Car Park.

Natural Causes

Saturday 18th May, 7pm at Picturedrome, Holmfirth

Four friends playing live film soundtracks, setting poems (including Ian McMillan), writing songs by email, and collaborating internationally.

Hugh Nankivell’s songs, from psychotropic lullabies to frantic stomps, offer quick-fire instrument changes, fractured vocals, and chamber-tight arrangements. Mercurial music, crocodile tearjerkers. Think XTC, Waits, Reich, Wyatt, Zorn.

This gig features Governor’s Songs: a song cycle written after a school governors’ meeting.

Natural Causes has played The Vortex, Opera North, Spitalfields, and Interrogate! festivals.

Natural Causes is comprised of:

  • Hugh Nankivell: Fender Rhodes, Piano, Keyboards, Voice
  • Chris Dowding: Trumpet, Flugal Horn, Percussion, Voice
  • Pat Allison: Clarinet, Guitar, Bass, Percussion, Voice
  • Ben McCabe: French Horn, Drum Kit, Voice

Led by musicians from Huddersfield and London, the band performs an innovative and exciting mix of winds, keyboards, and voices. Playing live to films connected to Holmfirth and Huddersfield like Maya Deren’s beautiful 1945 surrealist At Land; a tribute to composer John Cage whom they met locally eating breakfast; films made for Holmfirth’s Faulty Optic’s opera, The Wax Inspector, & Bamforth shorts.
